House Passes Bill to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent

House Passes Bill to Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act, which would make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide—eliminating the need to change clocks twice a year.

• House Vote: Passed 308-117

• Supported by President Donald Trump

• Next Step: The bill now heads to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain.

If the bill becomes law, New York City would see major changes during the winter:

• The sun would not rise until 8:00 AM or later for about 70 days each year (approximately Dec. 1 – Feb. 7), with the latest sunrise around 8:20 AM in early January.

• On the other hand, winter sunsets would be about one hour later. In New York, the earliest candle-lighting time would move from approximately 4:10 PM to about 5:10 PM.
